Clonazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine with anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant, and hypnotic properties. It is a tranquilizer of the benzodiazepine class. It is taken by mouth. It begins having an effect within an hour and lasts between 6 and 12 hours. As a major metabolite, 7-aminoclonazepam be used to monitor use of the parent drug, clonazepam.
