Deciphering Drug Test Abbreviations

If youʼre new to drugs and drug testing, it might feel overwhelming to have to learn all of the names of the drugs, the types of drug test kits available, the terminology -- and even the abbreviations that the drug testing industry uses to refer to each drug.

Donʼt worry though -- youʼll get all of those drug test abbreviations figured out! Weʼre here to help.

Drug Testing Abbreviations

Almost all manufacturers use the same abbreviations. The only exceptions are Benzodiazepines, known as both BZO and BZD, and Opiates, known as OPI, OPI300 and MOP -- with the latter two representing the Opiate panel with the lower cutoff level of 300 ng/ml.

The rest of the drug test abbreviations are relatively straightforward:

ALC = Alcohol
AMP = Amphetamine
BAR = Barbiturates
BUP = Buprenorphine
BZO = Benzodiazepines
BZD = Benzodiazepines
COC = Cocaine
mAMP = Methamphetamine
MET = Methamphetamine
MDMA = Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy)
MTD = Methadone
OPI = Opiates @ 2000 ng/ml cut-off level
OPI300 = Opiates @ 300 ng/ml cut-off level (more sensitive)
MOP = Opiates @ 300 ng/ml cut-off level (more sensitive)
OXY = Oxycodone
PCP = Phencyclidine
PPX = Propoxyphene
TCA = Tricyclic Antidepressants
THC = Marijuana / Tetrahydrocannabinol
TRA = Tramadol

Drug Detection Times

So now that you know what those abbreviations stand for, you need a sense of the window of detection for each drug. As you look at the drug detection times for drug testing, keep in mind that thereʼs always some variation in drug detection times. Things including body weight, frequency of use, rate of metabolism, hydration levels, route of administration and other factors can impact the rate of detection.

With all of our products, youʼll find the estimated detection times on the package insert that comes included in the packaging of the drug screens.

Amphetamines (AMP): 1-4 days
Barbiturates (BAR): 1-7 days
Buprenorphine (BUP): 1-3 days
Benzodiazepines (BZO): 1-7 days
Cocaine (COC): 2-4 days
Marijuana (THC): up to 1 month+
Methamphetamine (mAMP or MET): 2-5 days
Methadone (MTD): 1-5 days
MDMA (ecstacy): 2-4 days
Morphine (OPI, OPI300, MOP): 2-3 days
Opiates (OPI, OPI300, MOP): 2-4 days
Oxycodone (OXY): 1-4 days
Phencyclidine (PCP): 7-14 days
Propoxyphene (PPX): 1-2 days
